The Carnegie Collection Apatosaurus Baby (1988)

Original 1988 prototype.

The Carnegie Collection Apatosaurus Baby sculpted by Forest Rogers was in production in one form or another from 1988 to 2014. During its lifetime, the model was produced using at least 3 distinct molds, and issued in 2 different basic color schemes (each with their own minor variations). The prototype, presumably designed by Rogers, featured a beige body with dark gray stripes. Production versions included a gray and beige variant similar to the prototype, as well as later variants with more gray which replaced beige with gold, and a more common striped green variant.

This "dull wash" version has a combination of thinly applied gray paint over the base color plastic. Only the top half of the model is painted over in gray, and given a wash of greenish gray paint, with a different, glossy paint on the head. The vinyl is extremely soft and rubbery compared to later versions.

This variant is listed as both dull wash and primary due to it's appearance with both the dull wash set in early Schleich catalogs and it's close similarity to the paint prototype (top of this page).

Individual variation due to differences in hand painting.

Overall very similar to other dull wash variants, it appears to lack the glossy paint on the head. It also has a coat of matte, light gray paint covering the sides of the body, making this possibly the first fully painted or close to fully painted variant. This also seems to have been the earliest one for sale in the US, available by at least September 1988.

This version of the Apatosaurus baby is similar to the gloss wash, but with more muted colors reminiscent of the dull wash. This may belong to a more "polished" production run of the dull wash figures with more fully covered, glossy finish paint applications - a sort of "dull gloss" set (see also the glossy orange and green T. rex). It is painted in a surprisingly complex, layered series of dark grays and greens over the same rubbery beige plastic as the original dull wash variants. The paint is very glossy but lightly applied, unlike the thick paint of early 1990s variants. Some of the mottled appearance is due to the yellowish base coat showing through the thin layers of washes in random areas (this is not due to wear as a delicate coat of gloss is still visible over these areas and would have been the first thing to go if it was scuffed). Note that I had a VERY hard time capturing all the subtle color effects created by the multiple semi-transparent paint layers on this model with a camera, so be sure to check the color description above when comparing to your own figures. This figure must have required at least 3-4 nearly full-body paint/dry cycles to produce - not surprising that it was very quickly replaced with less time-consuming color schemes. The two primary layers of paint are also somewhat iridescent and change hue wen viewed from different angles.

Above: Similar sample - note that the green appears much lighter or darker depending on lighting.

The "twilight sands catalog version" of the Apatosaurus baby is similar to the gloss wash version, but with dark gray dominant color in place of blended greens, over a dark gold base coat that is left to show through on the head and legs. This early version has unpainted teeth and a splash of silvery white paint on the top of the head.

This gloss wash version was featured in catalog photography (primarily in Schleich catalogs) in 1991. It is the first variant to use a predominantly green colorway, which would later be adapted for the "Classic color" versions. Though it is similar in paint application and style to the more green-gray variant, with no true base coat but rather a series of overlapping light washes, a few differences stand out. The colors are more saturated, giving it a more vibrant green and yellow appearance. The subtly layered coats of light and dark green washes are much more iridescent than the dull wash equivalent, to the point they appear almost sparkly - the primary wash of light green/gold looks as if it is mixed with gold flecks, and the color changes from light yellow-green to Kelly green depending on the angle of the light. The overall effect is that the figure appears not just glossy, but almost metallic. A quintessential "gloss wash" variant. Also notable is the addition of a glossy gold splash of paint to the head. The overall effect is of a really premium figure with as much emphasis on paint application. These paint applications would be massively simplified in future variants - in the green striped "classic" versions, where each of the different shades present in this figure are basically separated out into separate paint colors and given a counter-shaded appearance.

Individual variation between samples - note the additional dark wash and gold head paint for the sample on the right.

This appears to be a later production version of the "twilight sand version" of the Apatosaurus baby. It is similar to the first twilight version, but it lacks the slightly greenish-gray wash that blends the yellow underside into the black back. Because of this, the yellow appears brighter (due to lack of gray wash) and is more visible on the legs, neck, and sides.

This version of the twilight Apatosaurus baby has added a beige belly and orange eye, both features which will be carried forward to the classic color variants It also has white painted teeth, unlike earlier Twilight versions which had unpainted teeth. It is made from black plastic but the plastic is relatively flexible rather than hard PVC.

The first "classic" color Apatosaurus Baby, like the adult version, had a layered paint application with narrow dark green stripes. The color pallet is the same as the final Gen 1 version, except not blended - the colors are separated into discrete stripe areas. This is a change seen across the board in the early 1990s Carnegie line and probably saved time and money on the painting stage of production. Note that the mold is still the same as the original Gen 1 version with the same imprint text.

This version of the Apatosaurus Baby continues to use the original sculpt and has the same glossy paint application with triangular stripes as the previous version. However, it has now been given a small CE mark - oddly, this seems to have two CE marks - one below the imprint stamp with a misprinted "E", and a clearer mark next to the phrase "Made in China".

This version of the Apatosaurus Baby continues to use the original sculpt, but "Made in China" has been erased from the info stamp. Interestingly, this version reportedly has no CE mark, meaning it may be a rare transitional model produced after the removal of "China" but before the removal of "Miami" and the addition of the CE mark.

2nd Mold

First release: 1992

Release: 1992
Status: Retool
Variant type: Classic
Material: Gray vinyl
Paint: 7 colors. Pale green (base color); glossy dark green (back, stripes); Kelly green (highlights); white (teeth), glossy orange (eyes), glossy black (pupils); glossy gray (claws).

Like other classic color Carnegie replicas, the Apatosaurus Baby mold was copied to create a second version, marked by "blocky" looking feet and a chunkier texturing. The head of this version is shorter and more "baby" like, with higher, arched brows and a stubby snout. Compare this to the relatively smooth, triangular head of the original sculpt.

This is a 3-piece mold with the imprint stamp on the belly rather than the side, compared to the original 2-piece mold. There has been a change in the imprint stamp: it is left-aligned, and eliminates "Miami, FL" and "Made in China". It lacks a CE mark, like some later versions of Mold 1.

In terms of paint, this version lacks any lime green or yellow patch on the throat, and the Kelly green usually present on the sides in other versions is highly reduced, to just some very lightly airbrushed highlight markings.

Same as the previous version, but with the addition of a small CE mark to the imprint stamp.

Version: 3
Release: c. 1994
Status: Material variation
Variant typeClassic
Material: Soft white rubber
Paint: 7 colors. Pale green (base color); dark green (back, stripes); Kelly green (highlights); white (teeth), orange (eyes), black (pupils); gray (claws).
Stamp text: Left-aligned. (C)1988 THE CARNEGIE / SAFARI LTD / APATOSAURUS BABY / 9 METERS / CE
CE mark: Small.
TDR: 5/10

This is the same sculpt as the other remolded Apatosaurus Babies, but like a few other Carnegies in the mid '90s, this one was cast in white plastic and painted with a more matte textured paint that was prone to scrapes, as it doesn't appear to have adhered very well to the underlying plastic. The paint appears to be the same colors as other secondary mold variants, but less glossy.

3rd Mold

Prototype
First release: 1997
Retired: 2014
Model number: 4004-01
Size:
Advertised scale: 1:40

Mold: 3
Version: 1
Status: Retool
Release: 1997
Variant type: Color vinyl
Material: Mint green vinyl
Paint: Glossy. 8 colors. Dark green (back, stripes); Kelly green (sides); beige (belly); yellow (underside of neck); orange (eyes); pink (mouth); white (teeth); gray (claws).
Stamp text: Left-aligned. (C)1988 THE CARNEGIE / SAFARI LTD / APATOSAURUS BABY / 9 METERS / CE / Made in China (on leg)
CE mark: Small.
TDR: 1/10

The 1997 retool gave Apatosaurus Baby a color scheme combining almost every color used in previous versions. Like the other models in the 1996 refresh, it was not fully painted. Instead, it is cast in mint green plastic with the secondary colors painted on. Note that the tag continued to feature the older version with a bent neck.

The belly stamp text is significantly off-center, leaving a large blank area above the text. The text is also squeezed between the right legs. There is no room on the belly for the words "Made in China", and the phrase has been moved onto the front left leg.

Compared with the previous mold.

Mold: 3
Version: 2
Release: c.1998
Status: Minor repaint
Variant type: Color vinyl
Material: Mint green vinyl
Paint: Glossy. 8 colors. Dark green (back, stripes); Kelly green (sides); beige (belly); yellow (underside of neck); orange (eyes); pink (mouth); white (teeth); gray (claws).
Stamp text: Left-aligned. (C)1988 THE CARNEGIE / SAFARI LTD / APATOSAURUS BABY / 9 METERS / Made In China / CE
CE mark: Large.
TDR: 1/10

Same as the previous version, but it has the newer large CE mark on the belly stamp, which has been re-aligned and once again includes "Made in China" on the belly.

Comments

  1. I have what seems to be a v. 2, except for the beige underside of the neck and white teeth; teeth are not sculpted on left side. stamp reads:

    c(copyright symbol) 1988 THE CARNEGIE
    SAFARI LTD MIAMI FL
    APATOSAURUS BABY (larger text)
    9 METERS
    MADE IN CHINA (smaller text)

    1. Thanks for the info, added! I made a note about the beige and white paint variant. I'm hesitant to add such things as new versions, because I suspect they may be down to simply rushed shifts in the factory art department or something. The amount and extent of yellow skin and black dots on the Parasaurolophus, for example, varies wildly between samples, with some having no yellow on the face at all, but this spans info stamp variants so is probably not an intentional paint change.

  2. I acquired a specimen today that seems to be a different sort of second generation baby apatosaurus. It has a dark grey base, is fully painted and uses three types of green. The yellow is only present in the eyes.

The belly stamp is interesting. It is center aligned. There is no CE. It reads:
    (c) 1988 THE CARNEGIE
    SAFARI LTD MIAMI FL
    A P A T O S A U R U S B A B Y
    9 METERS

There is a raised area below the last line where MADE IN CHINA seems to have been eliminated
