Review: The Carnegie Collection Quetzalcoatlus Replica

Image
Quick Facts 1998 Carnegie Collection Quetzalcoatlus replica Size:  28cm (wingspan) Scale:  1:37 (1:40 advertised) Sculpted by:  Forest Rogers Produced by:  Safari Ltd. Click here for full replica info and variants Quetzalcoatlus is the perennial “terrible dactyl” when it comes to pterosaurs, which is why I’m starting with this classic representation. This Quetz was already out of date when it debuted in 1998, despite some heroic efforts to make it the first “modern” looking pterosaur in the Carnegie Collection. The main problem with this replica is the head, which is based on the classic John Sibbick illustration found in Wellnhofer’s pterosaur encyclopedia. Sibbick based his Quetzalcoatlus head on a partial skull (number TMM 42489-2) which  probably belonged to a different pterosaur , leading to many years of Quetz being depicted with a short, blunt beak. So while this toy may or may not be a good representation of that unnamed azhdarchid, it’...

The Carnegie Collection Tylosaurus (2009)

Image
Name: Tylosaurus Species:  Tylosaurus proriger First release: 2009 Retired: 2015 Model number: 4215-01 Size: 31cm Scale: 1:40 Sculptor: Forest Rogers Version: 1 Release: 2009 Material: Hard light gray vinyl Paint: Glossy. 8 colors. White (base color, teeth); olive green (top); black (stripes, pupil); pink (mouth); red (palate); brown (wash); yellow (eyes); gloss (finish). Info text: Carnegie Tylosaurus / (C) 2008 Safari Ltd., Miami, FL / Made in China / CE CE mark: Large TDR  rating: 8/10 The Carnegie Collection Tylosaurus is the de facto upgrade to the old 1990 Mosasaurus. Though sculpted as a different species, the color scheme is similar and it is in a similar pose to the old classic model. Note the glossy finish of figures made during the first production run. Earlier production models also have painted pterygoid teeth and a red palate as well as red gum highlights, while later production runs dropped these details. The info text on the figure reads 2008, thoug...

The Carnegie Collection Woolly Mammoth (2003)

Image
Name: Woolly Mammoth Species:  Mammuthus primigenius First release: 2003 Retired: 2015 Model number: 4042-01 Size: 13cm shoulder height Scale: 1:30 Sculptor: Forest Rogers Version: 1 Release: 2003 Material: Hard dark brown vinyl Paint: Matte. 3 colors. Brown (ears, nails, trunk, eyes, wash); off-white (tusks); black (pupils). Stamp text: MAMMOTH / (C) 2002 THE CARNEGIE / Safari Ltd., Miami, FL / Made in China / CE CE mark: Large TDR  rating: 4/10 Though this model was advertised as 1:30 scale, it is closer to 1:25 scale unless you assume an unusually large individual. The Wild Safari Woolly Mammoth which was released the following year is closer to 1:40 or 1:45 scale. Ironically, the 2007 release of the Carnegie Woolly Mammoth erroneously included a photo of the Wild Safari version on its tag! As you can see in the photo below, later releases fixed this issue. This model was in production through 2015, but did not receive any updates to its mold or pa...

TDR  rating: 1/10 The original Carnegie Dimetrodon was produced from 1989 to 1997, for a total of eight years. Another four years would pass before the Carnegie and Safari released this larger-scale update. By this time, Safari had moved away from producing any very small models in their main line, reserving these for the Authentics and later Toob series. As a result, the new 2001 Di...
