The Carnegie Collection Stegosaurus (1988)

Original 1988 paint prototype.

The Carnegie Collection Stegosaurus sculpted by Forest Rogers was in production in one form or another from 1988 to 2015. During its lifetime, the model was produced using at least 5 distinct molds, and issued in 4 different colorways (each with their own minor variations, outlined in detail below). The prototype, presumably designed by Rogers, featured an orange body with cream highlights and dark brown stripes. Production versions included a gray variant, a brown and yellow variant, an orange and brown variant similar to the prototype, and finally a green and red variant.

Above: Basic colorways produced for the Carnegie Stegosaurus. Left to right - gray (1988-1989), yellow (1990-1996), orange (1997-2007), green (2007-2015).

The dull wash Stegosaurus Carnegie model was released in the US no later than September 1988, when it was first reported purchased. This dull wash variant is made of pea green rubber and is very flexible. It is partially painted with a messy wash of dark gray-green, and a distinctive semi-translucent splash of glossy white paint on the throat.

This appears to be the second version of Stegosaurus by the Carnegie Collection. As you can see, it looks generally similar to the original. However, the paint is restricted to the top of the back and the plates. The rubber is a light gray rather than yellowish green, and the paint is more purplish gray than dark greenish gray. It is missing the glossy white paint on the throat, instead having a faint airbrush of white there.

This gloss version is perhaps most similar of the various 1988-90 stegosaurs to the prototype pictured in 1988/89 catalogs. It has a matte pale yellow base coat similar in color to classic color Stegosaurus, but has been given a significant glossy, deep orange wash over most of the body. This creates a unique high-contrast between the dark orange wash and the pale yellow underside. The claws are unpainted.

The second generation of the Stegosaurus Carnegie model had a revised colorway. The top half of the body was a dark chocolate brown, with a yellow eye, while the bottom half was a golden yellow. The version pictured in 1990 Safari catalogs differs slightly from the gloss wash version - it has a more matte finish and subtle, evenly applied paint on the plates rather than light plates with dark tips. The brown paint is notably lighter as well. Unlike most other variants featured in the 1990 twilight sand photos, this retains the soft beige rubber material of the gold wash version, instead of hard black PVC. It's possible a black PVC version of this same colorway exists as well.

This (slightly later?) gloss wash variant has less glossy paint with much less of a golden brown wash than the initial 1990 version, instead having a brighter, orangey gold wash. There is minimal to no brown paint on the head. The claws are painted light gray. The plates have only a light airbrushing of brown paint with more thickly applied stripes of brown along the tops, but are mainly yellow. The date stamp on the bottom of the model continues to read "Miami, FL", and the text is centered. Note that unlike slightly more common variants of the classic color mold 1, this one has painted gray claws. It uses the typical soft beige rubber of other initial 1988 Carnegie releases.

This early gloss wash is very similar to the original gloss wash version, with a few minor differences. There is slightly less gloss to the paint, with less golden brown wash blending the dark brown and yellow halves of the model. This version lacks gray claws. The sculpt and plastic type remain unchanged.

Note: Anecdotal reports suggest this variant was available in US stores around 1990-1991. At least some samples shipped with the original diploma paper tag style from the 1989 launch wave.

Similar to the previous version, but with less glossy paint, larger eyes, and dark paint extending onto the head and neck. The line between the two main colors on the body are sharper in this version, and shaped into distinct downward-pointed triangles, almost mirroring the plates.

This version is a duplicate mold with several noticeable differences from the original. The sculpt feels chunkier and less definedThe detail on the flanks of the animal have much deeper wrinkles

Though it retains essentially the same colors as the previous version, the paint seems thicker and is glossier, possibly thanks to a coat of lacquer that would reduce scratching. The plates are a more uniform brown color than in previous versions. The tips are still darker, but they are blended with the more yellow bottom portions.

A few scrapes and dings on my sample reveal that this version is made of hard, dark gray vinyl, but the entire model is painted with an undercoating of yellow paint, onto which the brown paint was added. The stamp text omits "Miami FL" as with all of the retooled secondary molds. Notably, the length has been changed from "5 meters" to "6 meters". Presumably, the 5 meter number was based on the mounted specimen at the Carnegie museum, though this is not the largest Stegosaurus, and a 20cm model of a 5m animal does not equal 1:40 scale.

This version was photographed for the 1992 Early Learning Centre brochure, and likely was newly produced at that time.

The most noticeable difference is the shorter snout. Older variants have more accurate long, thin heads. This version has a shorter, rounder head. On close inspection it is clear this was not an intentional change but rather a problem with the injection molding tool. The tip of the snout had become damaged or obstructed. This may have been the reason why mold 3 (see below) was introduced, apparently, a year or two earlier than the overall line refresh in 1996.

3rd Mold

4000-01 Stegosaurus
Species: Stegosaurus stenops
First release: 1996
Retired: 2007
Model number: 4000-01
Size: 20 cm long

The sculpt of this Stegosaurus seems to have been totally retooled, with more wrinkly skin replacing the rectangular scales of previous versions. It has sharper molding, as opposed to the blocky 1992 version. This may have been primarily accomplished by tracing the old figure with a pantograph machine, but if so, it was much more skillfully done than the 1992 molds. The Stegosaurus has, most noticeably aside from the completely different skin texture, a new head sculpt, with a shorter, straighter neck, and a smaller, more triangular head (also more accurate to real fossils, though the shorter neck is actually less accurate than the 1988 version).

This is the same mold that would be used during the colored vinyl era, but in the colors of the early 1990s era Stegosaurus.

I have to admit that I owe an apology to DTF user Therizinosaurus, who posted the original photo of this variant on DTF many years ago. I included it on this page out of completeness, but I always suspected it was just a custom. Classic color Stegosauruses are extremely common (as of this writing), and in all my years of looking through eBay listings for new variants, I had never seen any other examples of a mid-90s mold in classic colors rather than the orange/cream/black colorway. The fact that the orange version originally came with the old paper tag made me suspect it COULD not even exist, since that would imply the orange multicolor version was possibly one of the earliest of the mid-90s line refresh to be released. Of course, my doubts were misplaced, as I have since found at least one sample of mold 3 that is painted in classic colors, with an identical paint application to the later versions of mold 2. (Ironically, I was accused once of having been fooled by a custom with the white plated version of mold 3, so I suppose no collector is immune to the temptation to think "if I haven't seen it in all my years of collecting, it does not exist". There really are just some hyper-rare variants out there.)

The mid-1990s saw the refresh of the Carnegie line, when it switched from fully painted models to models molded in colored plastic with only secondary colors painted on. While many of these models retained their original colorways, the Stegosaurus received an all new one, with a very striking array of beige, brown, and cream colors. I am listing this as both a "color vinyl" and "multicolor" version because it represents the confluence of both those production trends in the mid-90s. As far as I know, no "basic" or classic color color vinyl version existed before this, but one might turn up eventually.

Most interesting about this colorway is that, out of all the different colors Stegosaurus has been offered in over the years, this color scheme most closely resembles the original paint prototype (pictured at the top of this page). The basic colors are the same, with a more orange body color, dark outlines around each plate, a cream-colored underside, and dark stripes (though those have been greatly embellished compared to the prototype). It seems as though, having never quite matched the prototype with earlier versions, Safari used the line refresh as an opportunity to make something that looks closer to Forest Rogers' original vision.

The version pictured here is the rare "catalog version" with glossy white paint on the plates. This was eliminated in the mass produced version. So far, I have only seen this version either in lots or sold with the Carnegie display stand. It may have been specifically produced as a photography/display model at the beginning of the mid-90s refresh. I bought mine at the same store that sold me an unglued display mountain, and it probably was the display model that came with that mountain.

This is essentially the same model as the previous version, but is cast in a more orange tinted vinyl, with stripes on the plates that cover their full vertical height instead of stopping halfway down as in previous versions. This seems to be the more common version, as it was in production longer. Interestingly, despite the apparently late release of this version, it shipped with both brown parchment tags (attached with either the old gold elastic thread or beaded zip tie) and, later, glossy color tags. Note that it is the same mold as the original orange version, with a 1 after the CE mark, but the CE mark itself has been covered up and replaced with a larger version.

2007 saw the second refresh of the Carnegie line, and Stegosaurus again got a complete repaint. This used the first 1995 mold, complete with number 1 on the belly stamps and slimmer, pointier tail spikes. Of all the 2007 repaint variants, this has the best-applied paint application with a variety of blended green hues. Later versions would use both different molds and somewhat simplified paint applications.

This is essentially the same model as the previous version, but it omits the white paint from the plates, leaving them the same color as the body. The white paint on the belly also appears to be slightly glossier and more extensive. Note the "2" on the imprint stamp, which suggests this may have been a second mold, or copy of the original mold, allowing multiple production runs at the same time. This version shipped with both brown parchment tags (attached with either the beaded plastic zip tie) and, later, glossy color tags.

This is essentially the same model as the previous version, but has an even more simplified paint application, most notably lacking stripes on the plates. The mold has become noticeably degraded and fatigued by this point in its use, most noticeably in the area of the tail spikes, which are thick and lumpy rather than slim and pointy.

This version continues the late '90s/early 2000s trend towards increasing dark coloration on the color vinyl Stegosaurus figure. This one is particularly striking as it uses a very dark, glossy wash of brown paint over the top half of the body, paired with a bright orange head (a new color not seen before in other versions of this model). The plastic used here is much softer than most other Stegosaurus variants of this era, being relatively flexible, especially the thin plates which bend quite easily.

The mold seems identical to the initial 2007 green repainted version, and the paint is also a very similar texture/quality to the repaint era models, despite the different colors. So, despite shipping with the old 1997 era tag, this one likely was among the last orange and black Carnegie Stegosaurus figurines produced by Safari before the 2007 repaint wave.

This version of Stegosaurus was released a few years after the initial 2007 repaint (while it lacks a date stamp on the figure itself, the imprint on the tag lists the year of production as 2010). It has a modified mold with an all-new info stamp on the belly arranged into 3 lines. Note that the wrinkles on the belly extend under the text, unlike previous versions of this mold that had smooth bellies in areas where old date stamps were erased. The tail spikes have also been fixed from their previously lumpy state. This indicates that a new mold has been made from the original resin masters. The paint application is slightly reduced compared to the original green version, as it is missing the yellowish paint wash on the head and underside, but it has an added dark wash to further blend the dark stripes into the lighter green body.

This version used the same mold as the 2010 version, but with the scale now added to the end of the first line of the imprint stamp. It's interesting to note that by 2012, Safari had given up on revising their length estimate for Stegosaurus and simply asserted that this was 1:40 scale as part of the stamp - I guess they figured you could do the math. The paint application is similar to the 2010 production run, but appears to have less of a dark wash on the body and more of a dark wash on the plates, turning them almost more brown than red. It lacks any paint application on the belly, with the green there just being the color of the unpainted plastic. Note the date stamp on the foot indicates this production run was made in July 2012.

The last version of Stegosaurus was very similar to the previous 2012 production run in terms of its reduced paint application, but it seems to have received an additional streaked, dark wash over the red plates and an airbrushed coat of olive green paint on the belly, with a highly reduced dark wash on the body, more closely replicating the original 2007 colorway. The overall paint application is more matte, indicative of a switch to airbrushing. Note the date stamp on the foot indicates this production run was made in August 2014.

Comments

  1. Did you notice that your version six lists the text stamp with "Stegosaurus" on the third line, but the white=plated figure depicted has the Genus on the first line.
