Only a year after the introduction of the 1:10 scale Psittacosaurus, the Carnegie Collection indruduced yet another scale in the form of the 1:20 scale Tanystropheus. This is also the first and only Carnegie with an "action feature" - a posable neck. Like old Gumbie or Bend-Ems toys, a metal wire inserted into the soft plastic, via a series of paired holes molded into the underside. The wires allow the neck to be bent into a variety of positions. The original Tanystropheus toy was brightly colored with vivid blues and greens reminiscent of a tree snake.

In case anyone was curious what the bendy wire inside Carnegie's Tanystropheus looks like, user stemturtle at the old Dino Toy Forum took one for the team.

Along with many other models as part of a line refresh, the Carnegie Tanystropheus was given an all-new color scheme in 2007. The sculpt is unchanged, but it is made of more rigid material than the original.
Thanks to Mike Partington for photos and information on wire hole variations.

Version: 3
Release: 2010
Status: Retool
Material: Medium weight vinyl
Paint: Matte.
Stamp text: On belly. Left-aligned: Carnegie Tanystropheus / (C) 1999 Safari Ltd., Miami, FL USA / Made in China / 4037-01 / CE
TDR rating: 3/10

This version retains the brown 2007 era color scheme, but has been retooled. The info text is the 2010s Wild Safari style in 3 lines with "Carnegie" incorporated into the name of the figure. It is less bendable than the old version, and has fewer wire insertion holes (presumably meaning less wire is present inside the figure). The front wire holes are position in front of the forelimbs, instead of slightly behind them as in the first mold.
